Since I was a child, I’ve been drawn to serving in inner-city USA, meeting whatever needs arise in the space I’m in. For this reason, I’ve decided to move down to Atlanta to live in the “Big Purple House” with DOOR/Dwell for a year of service from August 2016 – July 2017. Because they cover my room, board, insurance, and bus pass, I am expected to contribute to the fund raising cause! Nonetheless, this will be a year of living simply. In addition to working 32 hours a week for a nonprofit, we will be doing various service and learning projects, joining an area church, and living in intentional community.
Often lately, I’ve been completely blown away by the opportunities that I’ve been given during my high school and college years. Much of my privilege is not directly related to money. Rather, I believe that relationships with people in my life have empowered me with the tools that I need to succeed–something you just can’t buy. I hope to “pay it forward” by forging new relationships in Atlanta!
I’ve received my placement; I will be working with an organization called “Back on my Feet”, which uses running as a process of empowerment for Atlanta’s homeless population.
I’m so hopeful that I’ll be able to use my unique gifts in a way that is uplifting and to approach this new challenge with humility and energy, knowing that I still have MUCH to learn from the people with whom I am working. I will let my ideas and convictions rest on open palms this year, careful not to hold too tightly to my worldview that will surely not stay stagnant as I learn and grow in this new place.
“Back on My Feet recruits members at homeless and residential facilities around the country and begins with a commitment to run three days a week in the early morning. After 30 days in the program, members with 90% attendance earn the opportunity to move into the second phase of the program called Next Steps, which provides educational support, job training programs, employment partnership referrals, and housing resources.”
